CIRCA SEES GROWTH IN SALE OF MEN’S WATCHES
For an increasing number of male customers, time is money
Hong Kong (June 24, 2014) – CIRCA, the leading international buyer of pre-owned jewellery, diamonds and watches, has seen a 10% increase in male customers this last year.
“The majority of our male clients are selling watches,” explains Angelina Chen, Senior Director of CIRCA Hong Kong. “Most want to upgrade to a more sophisticated brand or complicated timepiece. There is also a segment of male clients who follow our female customers and sell their watches because of changing trends.”
For example, small-faced watches have fallen out of favour with many women. CIRCA’s female clients have responded by selling their outdated piece for a larger, more fashionable watch. Likewise, men are now more sensitive to changing watch styles. “We see many male customers opting to sell their old-fashioned two-tone watches,” adds Chen. “They replace these with more stylish alternatives in rose gold.”
According to Chen, Rolex, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Chopard remain the most coveted brands among Hong Kong’s watch collectors. “While these are the most popular among CIRCA clients, we also see other luxury brands, such as Lange & Söhne, Vacheron Constantin and F.P Journe. When our customers are ready to sell, it’s either because they’re looking to upgrade or ready for a change. ”
While women have long recognised the financial and practical rewards of selling jewellery, men are catching up. “Aside from watches, CIRCA’s male clients also sell cufflinks, tie clips, wedding bands or engagement rings,” adds Chen. “They also sell women’s jewellery, which are either items from a failed relationship or pieces they’ve inherited.”
CIRCA’s 2013 inventory reflects the company’s trend toward male customers. Last year, diamonds ranked No.1 among the items purchased by CIRCA, while watches were a close second. Ms Chen attributes this to the increasing number of male customers. “More than ever, men are selling their outmoded timepieces and updating their wardrobe with a newer, more stylish brand. When it comes to watches, men don’t want to be behind the times.”
